General information about Narcodontics for children

Narcodontics is dental treatment under (partial or full) anesthesia or sedation. At Narcodontics Antwerp we focus on children up to 14 years old who benefit from treatment under anesthesia for medical or psychological reasons. This can be in cases of extreme fear, a low pain threshold or when extensive surgery is required, for example.

  • To reduce anxiety and stress in children
  • For very extensive or complex dental treatments
  • For children with disabilities or medical conditions that make cooperation difficult
  • To handle multiple treatments in one session, reducing the need for repeated visits

Practical questions (time, cost & reimbursement)

You can apply online or contact Narcodontics Antwerp by phone. We will then schedule an intake interview and medical check. Want to avoid long waiting times? Then schedule your appointment on time, especially if it’s a complex treatment.

At Narcodontics Antwerp, in most cases, there are no additional costs for the dental treatment itself. These costs are claimed directly to the insurance company via third-party payment.

However, there are costs associated with admission, anesthesia and hospitalization, since the procedure takes place in a private clinic. In most cases, insurance does not provide intervention for these costs. These must be paid at least a few days before the procedure.

The exact amount for these costs depends on the following factors:

  • The duration of the procedure and anesthesia procedure.
  • Any treatments required for which no insurance intervention is provided.

Currently, the cost for parents in most cases is about €350. These costs are clearly discussed with you in advance, so you know exactly where you stand.

Preparation & treatment

Proper preparation is essential for a successful anesthesia treatment. At Narcodontics Antwerp, we make sure that you and your child are fully informed about the process so that everything goes smoothly.

  • Medical Evaluation: We begin with a thorough evaluation of your child’s health status. This includes a detailed medical history to identify any risks and ensure that treatment can take place safely.
  • Staying sober: It is important that your child not eat anything (stay sober) 6 hours before the procedure. Up to 2 hours before the procedure, your child may drink a small amount of water. These guidelines are critical for safety during anesthesia.
  • Explanation and reassurance: We take the time to explain the procedure calmly and in a child-friendly manner. This helps your child feel at ease and ensures they begin the procedure as relaxed as possible.

By carefully following these steps, we ensure that both you and your child feel well prepared and reassured for the anesthesia treatment.

  • A specialized team, consisting of a dentist and an anesthesiologist, provides:

    1. Administering anesthesia (intravenously or through a mask, depending on what was agreed upon).
    2. Dental treatment while the child is under anesthesia.
    3. Continuous monitoring of heart rate, breathing and other vital signs for optimal safety.
